TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan — The Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center officially opened its newest exhibit, โ€œNaperulay nga Babbay: Women in Cagayanโ€™s History,โ€ at the Rizal Park in observance of National Womenโ€™s Month 2026 yesterday. The launching ceremony was led by Cagayan Museum Curator Niรฑo Kevin Baclig and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Mark Paul Alariao. The outdoor installation features the diverse and pivotal roles women have played throughout the provinceโ€™s historical narrative, spanning from the age of contact with the Spaniards to the modern period. The exhibit highlights the stories of several prominent women, tracing the spiritual authority of early shamans or aniteras and female chieftains in the late 16th century, to the leaders of colonial resistance, and finally to the pioneers of governance, the arts, and social welfare in contemporary times. The curation also focuses heavily on the minagganitu or aniteras, the indigenous priestesses of Cagayan, who served as the spiritual and social foundations of their communities. By featuring these figures, the exhibit aligns with the 2026 Womenโ€™s Month subtheme, “Lead Like Babaylans, Filipinas,” which seeks to emphasize the often-disregarded tradition of female leadership in Philippine society. The exhibit, located within the Rizal Park grounds in Tuguegarao City, is expected to last until the end of the month.
