TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN — The Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center (CMHRC), in collaboration with the Cagayan Tourism Office (CTO), has conducted a comprehensive two-day educational series titled “Pre-colonial Cagayan Culture: Performing Arts and Attire.” yesterday. In attendance to the lectures are the council members of the newly formed province-wide performing arts bureau, which includes representatives from different school-based dance, music, and theater organizations across Cagayan. Led by Jan Karl Coballes, Museum Researcher II, the initiative was designed to bridge the gap between academic scholarship and application of Cagayano cultural identity in contemporary performing arts. The workshop opened with a look into the foundational frameworks of historical reconstruction as a discipline and how it can be utilized in Cagayan to visualize lost cultural practices such as precolonial performing arts and attire. Participants were also introduced to relevant theories and research methods necessary in the process of cross-referencing different types of sources to approximately reconstruct cultural aspects in the distant past. This academic grounding facilitated a reimagining of precolonial society, mapping the ancient ethnic landscape, social hierarchies, and the trade networks that defined the Valley prior to Spanish contact. The seminar also featured a study of indigenous Cagayano dances, complemented with a module on music and chanting, where learners interacted with both indigenous instruments and those of colonial origin. Finally, the workshop explored the evolution of Ibanag and Itawit indigenous attire. The session traced the history and decline of Cagayano traditional textiles and weaving practices, providing a detailed look at the specific elements of precolonial male and female garments. With the knowledge gained from the seminar, leaders and artists in the province’s performing arts sector would now have the opportunity to present dances, chants, music, and attire inspired by precolonial Cagayan that are based on rigorous research and historicity.
